Glass surfing, where a bearded dragon stands on its hind legs and frantically scratches at the enclosure glass, is one of the most common behavioral concerns for bearded dragon owners. Understanding the causes helps you create a more comfortable environment for your reptile.

What Glass Surfing Looks Like

The bearded dragon stands on its hind legs with front legs pressed against the glass, moving back and forth or scratching at the surface. Some dragons do this occasionally, while others may glass surf for hours. Persistent glass surfing indicates an unmet need.

Enclosure Size

The most common cause is an enclosure that is too small. Adult bearded dragons need a minimum of a 120-gallon enclosure, and many experts recommend larger. A dragon that cannot adequately move, thermoregulate, or establish distance from its basking spot will glass surf to seek more space.

Temperature Issues

Incorrect temperatures are a major trigger. If the basking spot is too hot, the cool end is not cool enough, or the thermal gradient is insufficient, your dragon will glass surf looking for a more comfortable zone. Verify temperatures with a digital thermometer at multiple points in the enclosure.

Seeing Their Reflection

Bearded dragons may interpret their reflection as another dragon, triggering territorial or stress responses. Using a background on three sides of the enclosure reduces reflection and provides a sense of security. Light-colored backgrounds are less reflective than dark ones.

Hunger and Attention

Some bearded dragons learn that glass surfing brings their owner’s attention and subsequently food or interaction. If your dragon primarily glass surfs at feeding time or when they see you, this may be a learned behavior. Establish consistent feeding schedules to manage expectations.

New Environment Stress

Newly acquired bearded dragons commonly glass surf as they adjust to unfamiliar surroundings. Allow two to three weeks of adjustment with minimal handling. Ensure the enclosure provides adequate hiding spots so the dragon has a retreat option when feeling overwhelmed.
