Relaxed Fluffing

A gently fluffed bird with slightly raised feathers is comfortable and content. This is the resting state equivalent of a human lounging on the couch. The feathers create an insulating air layer and indicate that the bird feels safe in its environment.

Tight, Slicked Feathers

When a bird presses its feathers tightly against its body, creating a sleek, thin appearance, it is usually feeling stressed, frightened, or alert to a perceived threat. This makes the bird appear smaller and more streamlined for a potential quick escape.

Raised Crest and Head Feathers

In species with crests like cockatiels and cockatoos, the crest position is a primary mood indicator. A fully raised crest indicates excitement, surprise, or fear depending on context. A relaxed, slightly raised crest signals contentment. A flat crest typically indicates anger or fear.

Pin Feathers and Flashing

Some species, particularly African Greys and Amazons, can dilate and contract their pupils rapidly while fluffing head feathers, known as pinning or flashing. Health Warning Signs

Continuously fluffed feathers in a bird that appears lethargic, combined with sitting on the bottom of the cage, eyes closed, or reduced appetite, can indicate illness.
