Can birds eat rice?

Birds

Yes, birds can safely eat rice, both cooked and raw. The old myth that uncooked rice expands in a bird's stomach and causes harm is completely false. Wild birds eat raw grains, including rice, from fields around the world without any ill effects. Ornithologists and avian veterinarians have thoroughly debunked this urban legend.

Cooked rice, whether white or brown, makes an easy and nutritious addition to your pet bird's diet. Brown rice is the better choice because it retains more fiber, B vitamins, and minerals than refined white rice. Cook it plain without salt, butter, oil, or seasoning of any kind. Let it cool to room temperature before serving.

Raw rice is also safe but harder for smaller birds to eat. Larger parrots may enjoy crunching on dry grains, while finches and budgies will do better with cooked or soaked rice that is softer and easier to manage.

Rice can be a useful vehicle for introducing other healthy foods. Mix cooked rice with finely chopped vegetables like carrots, broccoli, or bell peppers to create a warm, appealing mash that many birds find irresistible. This is especially helpful for picky eaters who refuse vegetables on their own.

Keep portions moderate. Rice is a carbohydrate-heavy food and should not replace pellets or fresh vegetables as dietary staples. A tablespoon or two of cooked rice a few times per week is appropriate for a medium-sized parrot.

Remove uneaten cooked rice from the cage within two hours to prevent bacterial growth, especially in warm environments. Cooked grains spoil faster than dry foods and can harbor harmful bacteria if left sitting.
