How often should I clean the litter box?

Cats

Most indoor cats do best when waste is scooped at least once daily, and ideally twice a day in multi-cat homes. Cats are fastidious about odor and texture. A dirty box is one of the most common reasons cats begin avoiding the litter area or choose inconvenient alternatives like laundry baskets or rugs.

Solid waste and urine clumps should be removed every day for clumping litter. Non-clumping litter often needs more frequent partial changes because urine spreads through the substrate. Follow the litter manufacturer’s guidance, but treat that as a minimum, not a maximum, if your cat is picky.

Plan a full litter replacement and box wash on a regular schedule, commonly every two to four weeks for clumping products, or sooner if you smell ammonia or see sticky residue. Wash the box with mild unscented soap and hot water; strong citrus or floral cleaners can repel sensitive cats.

In multi-cat households, the usual recommendation is one box per cat plus one extra, on different levels or quiet areas of the home. Boxes should be large enough for your cat to turn around comfortably, with low entry for seniors and kittens where needed.

If your cat strains to urinate, cries in the box, passes blood, or visits much more often than normal, treat that as urgent. These signs can indicate urinary blockage or infection and need same-day veterinary care, not just more frequent scooping.
