Can I have a pet if I have allergies, and what are my options?

General

Pet allergies affect roughly ten to twenty percent of the global population, but having allergies does not necessarily mean you cannot own a pet. The key is understanding what triggers your reaction and taking targeted steps to minimize exposure.

Most pet allergies are caused by proteins found in dander, saliva, and urine rather than fur itself. This means no dog or cat is truly hypoallergenic, though some breeds produce fewer allergens or shed less, reducing airborne particles. Dog breeds like Poodles, Bichon Frises, and Portuguese Water Dogs tend to trigger fewer reactions. Among cats, Balinese, Russian Blue, and Siberian breeds are often better tolerated.

Before committing, spend extended time around the specific breed you are considering. Short visits may not reveal the full extent of your reaction. Some allergists offer specific IgE testing to identify which animal proteins trigger your symptoms.

Environmental controls make a significant difference. Run HEPA air purifiers in rooms where your pet spends time. Vacuum with a HEPA-filter vacuum at least twice weekly. Wash pet bedding in hot water weekly. Keep pets out of bedrooms to maintain an allergen-free sleeping zone. Hard flooring collects less dander than carpet.

Medical management options include over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and eye drops for mild symptoms. For moderate to severe allergies, allergen immunotherapy through shots or sublingual tablets can reduce sensitivity over time. Consult an allergist to build a personalized treatment plan.

If mammalian dander is the issue, consider non-traditional pets. Fish, reptiles, and hermit crabs produce no mammalian allergens. Some people with dog and cat allergies tolerate these species without any symptoms.

Regular grooming also helps. Bathing dogs weekly and wiping cats with damp cloths reduces surface allergens. Have a non-allergic household member handle grooming or wear a mask and wash hands immediately afterward.
