How do I plan a pet-friendly vacation?

General

A pet-friendly vacation requires advance planning for accommodation, transportation, health documentation, and daily activities that include your animal safely and comfortably.

Start by confirming your pet is healthy enough to travel. Schedule a veterinary checkup two to four weeks before departure. Request a health certificate if crossing state or international borders, as most require documentation dated within 10 days of travel. Verify vaccinations are current and bring paper copies of records.

Choose accommodations that genuinely welcome pets rather than merely tolerating them. Filter hotel searches specifically for pet-friendly properties and read the fine print regarding breed restrictions, weight limits, additional fees, and how many animals are allowed. Vacation rental platforms often have more flexible policies than hotel chains. Confirm pet deposits and damage policies before booking.

For road travel, secure your pet in a crash-tested crate or harness system. Never let animals ride unrestrained or with their head out the window. Stop every two to three hours for bathroom breaks, water, and brief walks. Never leave a pet in a parked car, even with windows cracked, as interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes.

Air travel requires airline-specific research. Cabin policies vary by carrier and change frequently. Small pets that fit under the seat in an approved carrier may fly in the cabin, while larger animals require cargo transport or specialized pet airlines. Sedation during flights is generally discouraged by veterinarians unless specifically prescribed.

Pack familiar items including your pet's regular food, medications, bowls, bedding, a favorite toy, waste bags, and a portable water bottle. Bring a recent photo of your pet in case of separation.

Research pet-friendly activities and restaurants at your destination. Many parks, beaches, outdoor patios, and hiking trails welcome leashed animals. Identify the nearest emergency veterinary clinic before you arrive so you are prepared for any health issue that arises away from home.
