Crude protein
Definition
Crude protein is the total protein content listed on a pet food label, calculated by measuring nitrogen content, which includes protein from both animal and plant sources.
Extended explanation
The guaranteed analysis panel lists crude protein as a minimum percentage. The term 'crude' refers to the measurement method (nitrogen analysis) rather than quality. A food can have high crude protein from less digestible plant sources like corn gluten, which provides a different amino acid profile than chicken or fish meal.
To compare foods with different moisture levels (kibble vs. canned), convert to a dry-matter basis by removing the water percentage. For example, a canned food with 10% crude protein and 78% moisture actually contains about 45% protein on a dry-matter basis. Looking at named animal proteins in the first few ingredients alongside the crude protein number gives a more complete picture of diet quality.
