GDV (bloat)
Definition
Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening emergency in which a dog’s stomach distends with gas and may twist, cutting off blood supply and causing shock.
Extended explanation
Large, deep-chested breeds face higher risk, but any dog can bloat. Nonproductive retching, distended abdomen, pale gums, and collapse require immediate emergency care. Prevention strategies include measured meals, avoiding heavy exercise around feeding, and discussing gastropexy with your veterinarian for at-risk dogs.
Never wait overnight to see if symptoms improve; minutes matter once volvulus occurs.
