Why Vaccinations Matter

Vaccines protect your puppy from serious, potentially fatal diseases. Following the proper schedule is crucial for building immunity.

Core Vaccines

Every puppy should receive these vaccines:

DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus)

  • Schedule: 6-8 weeks, then every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks
  • Protects against: Four deadly viruses
  • Booster: At one year, then every 3 years

Rabies

  • Schedule: 12-16 weeks (legally required in most areas)
  • Protects against: Fatal neurological disease
  • Booster: At one year, then as required by law (1-3 years)

Optional Vaccines

Based on lifestyle, your vet may recommend:

  • Bordetella (kennel cough) - for social dogs
  • Leptospirosis - for dogs exposed to wildlife
  • Lyme disease - for tick-prone areas
  • Canine influenza - for boarding or dog shows

Preparing for Vet Visits

  1. Bring records - Any previous vaccination records
  2. Bring a stool sample - Fresh, for parasite testing
  3. List questions - Write them down beforehand
  4. Stay calm - Your puppy senses your emotions

Important: Until your puppy completes their vaccination series, limit exposure to unvaccinated dogs and public areas where infected dogs may have been.

Post-Vaccination Care

Most puppies handle vaccines well. Watch for:

  • Mild lethargy - Normal for 24 hours
  • Slight soreness - At injection site
  • Reduced appetite - Temporary is normal

Contact your vet if you see:

  • Facial swelling
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme lethargy

Cost Expectations

Puppy vaccination series typically costs $75-200 depending on your location and which vaccines are given. Many vets offer puppy packages that include all visits.
