Nine months is the perfect preparation window to help your pet adjust to the biggest change your household will ever experience. This timeline ensures nothing is rushed.

Starting early allows changes to feel natural rather than associated with the baby’s arrival.

Months 7-9 of Pregnancy

Begin schedule adjustments gradually. If the baby will change your pet’s routine, start those changes now. Introduce baby furniture and equipment. Play recordings of baby sounds at low volume. Establish new boundaries around the nursery.

Creating Off-Limit Zones

Decide which areas will be off-limits once the baby arrives and establish those boundaries now. Baby gates, closed doors, and training to stay out of certain rooms should be in place well before the baby comes home.

Desensitization Training

Practice carrying a wrapped doll to accustom your pet to seeing you hold something. Walk with the stroller so your dog learns to walk alongside it. Reward calm behavior around baby-related objects and activities.

First Introduction

Before the baby comes home from the hospital, bring home a blanket with the baby’s scent. Allow your pet to investigate at their pace. When bringing the baby home, have someone else carry the baby so you can greet your pet normally first.

First Months Together

Never leave your pet unsupervised with the baby. Create positive associations by giving treats when the baby is present. Maintain your pet’s exercise and attention routine, even when exhausted from new parenthood. This is when many pets develop behavioral issues from sudden neglect.

Growing Together

As your baby grows into a crawler and then a toddler, teach them gentle pet interaction from the earliest age. Supervise all pet-child interactions. Teach your child that pets have boundaries and feelings. A respectful relationship established early lasts a lifetime.
