Kennel cough spreads rapidly in places where dogs congregate such as boarding facilities, dog parks, and shelters. The signature dry, hacking cough may be accompanied by nasal discharge and mild lethargy. Most healthy adult dogs recover within one to two weeks, but puppies, seniors, and immunocompromised dogs can develop pneumonia. Vaccination is available as an intranasal spray, oral dose, or injection and is often required by boarding and grooming facilities. Prompt isolation of coughing dogs helps limit outbreaks.
